Manring Masterclass SWR Amp Winner Donates His Old ComboMay, 2008 Mario Padron of Hoboken, New Jersey, didn’t even know he was signing up for a contest when he registered for Bass Player’s Live Online Masterclass with Michael Manring. Padron, who plays devotional Indian music and electronica was just looking for ideas about playing differently. “Michael Manring is a master of using the bass as a palate, bringing out all the possible colors. This was a chance to watch him play and actually interact with him.”
So it was a surprise when he heard that he had won an SWR Working Pro combo, courtesy of Masterclass sponsor, SWR. His next thought? To donate his old combo to a local school music program. Padron explains: “Like the Wailers song, ‘Pass It On,’ I had the fortune to win something, so I felt I should pass that generosity on to someone who could benefit.” Aside from winning the amp, Padron, who notes that Bass Player has been a part of his musical life “for a long time,” says he really enjoyed the Manring Master Class’s live web format. “It was different from an instructional video, since there was someone there interacting with the artist, and live reader questions coming through, too. I felt like my own questions were being answered, even though I didn’t ask one myself.” Bass Player’s next online masterclass will be Wednesday, May 28, with Marcus Miller on at 9PM EST/6PM PST. With the topic “How I Get My Tone (and How You Can Get Yours),” Marcus will be demonstrating and taking questions about how to match amp and EQ settings to specific playing styles.
