See The Flaming Lips Do The Dark Side of the Moon

Flaming Lips flier

As you can read in the November issue of EQ, the process of making The Flaming Lips' latest album, Embryonic, was no cakewalk. There was lots of experimentation and "You can't do that!" studio moments. You'd think it'd be time to celebrate and maybe hit the hot tub. But the guys aren't planning to rest on their laurels at some exotic island vacation home just yet. Instead, they took on the challenge of recording a track-by-track cover album of Pink Floyd's oh-so-experimental LP from 1973, Dark Side of the Moon.

It's a collaboration with Stardeath and the White Dwarfs, a group from Oklahoma City that features Lips singer Wayne Coyne's nephew, Dennis. According to Coyne, Henry Rollins and Peaches also make appearances on the album. The Lips' version of Dark Side of the Moon will be initially released on iTunes. A release date is pending.

For the lucky bunch of you who live in The Lips' hometown of Oklahoma City, you'll have the great opportunity to watch them perform their version of Dark Side of the Moon on New Year's Eve. The event is happening at the Cox Center on Dec. 31. Here's a taste of what people may see on that fateful night: The Lips did a cover of Dark Side of the Moon's closer, "Eclipse," during their performance on KCRW's Morning Becomes Ecclectic: http://www.kcrw.com/media-player/mediaPlayer2.html?type=video&id=mb091016the_flaming_lips

I saw the Lips at The Knitting Factory in LA! Having them do Dark Side would be like Lady Gaga doing The Hissing of Summer Lawns by Joni, or when The Jonas Brothers jammed with Stevie Wonder! Pink Floyd's brilliant record done by a boring band! At least they like Meddle...
